I completed my A Levels in Maths Physics in Drama in 2019 and have been tutoring in these subjects since then. Throughout my time at school I have always picked up new content fairly quickly and found ways to learn new facts. I have a very analytical brain which makes mathematical subjects come quite naturally to me. Throughout my education I have always helped my peers with anything they were struggling with, trying to explain things in a way that may not have occurred to them. My personal hobbies include singing and dancing which always means I have a creative side to me which helps with subjects such as Drama and English and also helps me to create new ways of looking at things which might work better for some people than the conventional method.
I have been tutoring for a 4 years and have tutored English, Maths, Physics and Drama to students ranging from age 5-16. Last year one of my year 11 students who was predicted a 6 in her Maths GCSE achieved an 8. I tutor children from a variety of backgrounds. Some people have an aim of passing a GCSE whilst others have aims of achieving a 9. I will work with the student to achieve their own personal goal.
I currently have students in India and Qatar studying with me and we work together to facilitate an appropriate time over zoom.
First of all I believe it is really important to do what you can to make a child connect with a subject. When they put their barriers up and say they can’t do it then that is the point where we get stuck. To start with I think it’s important to gage their ability - starting with something easier in order to build their confidence.
When we start working on something a bit more challenging I would always let the child talk me through it for example with a maths question I would get them to take me through the steps that they would do. This allows me to see how they are processing the question and work out which steps they are becoming stuck with. When they hit a point where they have got it wrong or are stuck I would try to point them in the right direction but let them do most of the thinking. This hopefully will mean if they come to a similar problem they will remember the hint and it will help guide them to the right answer. On the whole, the tutoring session is led by the child and I would change my approach to fit their needs and together we would find a method that worked well for them.
