I am a University of Warwick graduate (BSc Hons) in Biological Sciences, with a specialism in Medical Microbiology and Virology. I have worked as an unqualified Secondary school classroom teacher, and as a private tutor for over fifteen years, in addition to working in libraries.

As an experienced tutor, I am passionate about and confident in helping my students overcome barriers to their learning so that they can make fantastic progress and achieve their potential. Over the last few years especially, I have adapted to online learning and helping my students to engage with their learning, by building a strong rapport.

I am skilled at teaching online via Microsoft Teams, Skype and Google Meet in combination with the Microsoft Whiteboard app.

Tutoring Experience

With more than fifteen years of experience, I have successfully taught students in the three Sciences up to GCSE and in Biology and Chemistry up to A-Level. I have experience with the major examination boards including AQA, Edexcel and OCR, and have also taught the IGCSE. Additionally, I have tutored in Maths and English at KS2. My working knowledge of the national curriculum, and the examination specifications and past examination papers is very strong. Recently, I have successfully tutored Access to Radiology and Access to Nursing students.

Tutoring Approach

Having taught a range of subjects at KS3 and KS4, with an emphasis on Science, I have strong demonstrable subject knowledge and excellent working knowledge of the National Curriculum. I also have experience evaluating and assessing pupil progress, and adapting my teaching to suit. This helps to inform my approach to tutoring.

I usually begin tutoring by evaluating the learner's learning needs and understanding their objectives and reasons for seeking tuition. I then use a wide range of techniques to encourage understanding and motivate learning.

Discussing the learners preferred learning style e.g. visual style, helps me to tailor tuition sessions to suit individual pupils. Clear explanations coupled with plenty of worked and practise examples help to cement understanding of key concepts.

Providing tuition at the right pace and covering areas of weakness in depth, with plenty of practice, has been the key to providing successful tuition. Past examination papers and ICT-based animations and presentations have also been useful in explaining difficult concepts and encouraging students to apply their skills and knowledge.
