I am an experienced Teacher of Chemistry and have held wide ranging roles from Head of Key Stage 4 Science and Head of Year 12, all at Independent and Grammar schools. I now teach at one of the top performing Grammar school in the country for attainment, where we have a large cohort of students who take Chemistry for A Level (136 in Year 12 and 124 in Year 13) and around 70% of these students achieve A* or A. I am a Masters and PGCE graduate from Jesus College and Green Templeton College, University of Oxford and have tutored for over 15 years, taking the last 4 years out to raise my young family. Prior to teaching I was a Physiotherapist and worked in the NHS for three years, and with an Australian Rules football team for 6 weeks for a summer placement. I enjoy tutoring due to the relationships that I build with my students and the sense of satisfaction when they finally achieve or succeed their goals

Tutoring Experience

I have over 1000 hours of tutoring experience and tutor all three sciences from Year 7 to Year 11, AS Biology and Chemistry A Levels. I can also tutor KS3 Maths. During lesson observations at school and feedback from parents, I have consistently been told that I am approachable, caring and a good listener, quick to pick up on strengths and weaknesses of students and put effective actions into place to help them succeed. I have experience marking Maths Entrance tests and I am an A Level Chemistry Examiner for the Edexcel exam board. I am well placed to help students tackle the most challenging exam questions as well as helping them develop exam techniques to gain confidence in sitting exams. I have also helped with UCAS applications and ran Oxbridge entry programmes for Sixth Form students for a number of years, helping with personal statements and interview techniques.

Tutoring Approach

Depending on the student a typical lesson starts with quick fire retrieval practice, followed by reviewing difficult concepts, before trying out exam questions. Individualised, concise and clear feedback is given to ensure you know what to work on to progress. I break down complex concepts into simple explanations, followed by repetitions to ensure solid foundation in the topic. I provide clear, step by step explanations with lots of past paper practice. Each lesson is tailored to the learner's specific needs.
