Andrew

Hi. I am a current Mathematics teacher at an independent school and have extensive experience in Mathematics teaching including a MSc and PGCE. I enjoy tutoring with my main focus on the individual such that they get the most out of the tutoring experience and take great joy out of their achievements in the subject.

Tutoring Experience

I started teaching 19 years ago and have extensive experience in teaching all ability both in state and independent teaching along with all examinations including CE, KS3, GCSE, A-level and IB. In this time, I have tutored a wide variety of students with issues ranging from preparation for CE, looking for a grade C at GCSE, aiding the transition between GCSE and A-level as well as sharpening students ability to hit the top grades at IB and A-level. Currently I am examiner for Edexcel for AS and A2 Mathematics and have also had experience in marking CE and GCSE as well as revision schools.

Tutoring Approach

I like to tailor my tutoring to the individual – I feel young people learn mathematics in different ways and all have had differing experiences in the way they have been taught. My aim is to understand the tutee and then create a programme which firstly builds confidence in the subject and then develop both their conceptual understanding of the topics along with the essential learning skills needed to improve in mathematics.

I use basic technique worksheets to gain a solid conceptual understanding and then move onto a more problem-based approach where I give the students complex problems, including exam style questions. This encourages the tutee to work on both their questioning and problem solving skills which are essential in being able to answer higher end exam questions. Students will be on their own in an exam therefore they need to have confidence in being able to attempt questions that look complicated.
