I have a deep passion for mathematics which comes from the way it explains and predicts the behaviour of things that we see every day. As a dog walker who goes out in the dark during winter I see the length of a day increasing/decreasing at different rates and know that it’s due to its sinusoidal nature. I also find the way the different aspects of maths fit together beautiful, for instance the loose ends of unsolvable quadratic equations which are dealt with when complex numbers are introduced, and completeness achieved. The trigonometric identities involving double angles can look a bit of a hot-potch mess, despite versions of their proofs being elegant. But when they are derived using De Moivre’s theorem they look so neat.
Taught maths up to a level further maths for 27 years. Helped students with MAT exams too.
Setting work to make the students think. Too many maths teachers treat it as just needing to show methods and practice to death
