Andrew

I am an enthusiastic Maths teacher, whose has successfully tutored students aged from 14 to 18 through GCSE and A level examinations on a part time basis for nearly 10 years. I have now retired from full time teaching but continue to tutor students on a face to face and online basis. I would like to offer tutoring to students from a wide range of backgrounds and hence am able to offer discounts in some cases.

Tutoring Experience

Having achieved a first in my Chemical Engineering degree, I worked in the chemical industry for a number of years until 2005, when I decided to retrain as a Mathematics teacher. I gained my PGCE as a Secondary Mathematics teacher in 2007 and I have taught mathematics in a secondary schools for 5 years and subsequently at Newcastle college for 4 years. I have had experience tutoring the new problem based GCSE, which results in students being awarded the new numeric grades from 1 (low) to 9 (high), as well as the new A level specification which is now solely examined in year 13.

Tutoring Approach

I am keen to encourage the student to take the lead in tutoring sessions, by asking them to bring difficulties and problems to each tutoring session. However I recognise that some students need more structure in tutorial sessions. In which case I like to provide recap material for students to identify difficulties and use these to direct a lesson. I think a tutor should work in tandem with the tutee's school to ensure that the sessions are aimed at consolidating or if required extending the topics that the student is currently studying at school. I have gained a lot of experience tutoring online in the past year. Hence I am able to offer online as well as face to face tutoring.
