Roderick Andrew

I have a B.Sc Hons in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Engineering. I now combine tutoring with Aviation Consultancy work. Note that most of my tutoring work comes from personal recommendations and not through advertising.

Having developed a strong passion for Mathematics in my school days, I started tutoring by helping family and friends with GCSE and A Level (AS and A2) examination preparation and I found it both very rewarding and very enjoyable. I do think that using Mathematics (specifically Statistics and Mechanics) in my Professional Career has given me a practical advantage over many other tutors and I think that I provide a refreshing approach to Mathematics Tutoring.

I already have 5 Students "registered" with me from Sept 2024 and these are all through personal recommendations.

I am married with 2 children. One is now a Graphic Designer in London and the other is a Maths/PE Teacher in Liphook, Hampshire. In my spare time I am a keen sportsman - playing badminton, squash and golf. I am also a long suffering Southampton Football Club supporter !

Although Roderick is my first name, I am known as "Andy". I am happy to travel to any tutee within 10 miles of my home at no cost. F2F tutoring is much more rewarding than on-line tutoring.

Important note. I am now specialising in tutoring A-Level Maths and Further Maths only. Specifically, this covers the new Syllabus that was introduced in 2017 and includes all examining boards - EDEXCEL, AQA, OCR, OCR (MEI) and CAMBRIDGE.

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored Mathematics for many years at all levels of Secondary Education.

I have a very good success rate with all of the above. For GCSE Mathematics, this includes both Foundation Tier and Higher Tier and with the new GCSE syllabus. For A-Level, this includes the traditional Cores 1 to 4, Mechanics 1 & 2, Statistics 1 & 2, Cambridge Pre-U Further Mathematics and the challenging new A-Level syllabus.

Tutoring Approach

Confidence is so important so this comes from developing a fun "working" relationship (please read my feedback on this specifically). I find out where each student sits relative to his/her goals and then prepare each session to the individual requirements of the student.

For students taking examinations then practice with past papers and examination technique are very important ...but only after the principles are fully understood. I strongly believe in providing 'Model Answers' to students as part of their preparation for exams - this is where I provide a detailed step by step explanation as to how a question should be answered but also emphasise the principles that are involved.

In reality, passing examinations in Mathematics does come down to approx. 60% knowledge, 20% confidence and 20% exam technique. So I make sure that I try and improve all three.

Finally, my son is a young enthusiastic Mathematics teacher so I am up to date with all of the various syllabus changes that are currently taking place.
