Hello!
My name is April and I'm originally from Canada but have been living abroad in the United Kingdom since 2016.
My educational background includes a variety of subjects, such as psychology, media, communications, and hospitality, however English Literature is my strongest subject.
I have recently graduated from my PhD in information management (July 2025), which covers the topic of how young people in the UK and Canada experience persuasive and informative election campaigns.
Professionally, I have experience in journalism, hospitality, education, and communications.
In my free time, I have also participated in many forms of creative writing, such as poetry, screenplay writing, and prose.
Currently, I work as an SpLD Tutor through an agency, where I deliver one-to-one sessions with students both in-person and online, in order to help them develop their study skills strategies, towards academic empowerment. This involves using a range of techniques surrounding time management, critical thinking, writing strategies, along with assistive technologies and programs.
Additionally, I have worked as an ad-hoc lecturer for a public relations first year university module in Scotland, where I delivered lectures, conducted in-class tutorials, answered student questions, and marked student assignments. I also served as a first marker for several university modules, as well as a second-marker.
I have also been a peer tutor previously at my college in Canada between the years 2002-2004 and 2008-2010, where I worked with students on an individual basis to improve their writing and English-language skills.
Additionally, I have over 20 years' professional experience in writing, editing, and proofreading, primarily for corporate clients and community media outlets.
My teaching approach is student-centred and follows a constructivist paradigm, with a liberationist sensibility. Within this approach, the student guides the learning sessions by voicing their individual strengths and weaknesses, as a starting point from which to plan lessons, and thereby facilitate the best learning outcomes. Students are guided through critical thinking and concept-mapping exercises, in order to grasp ideas and make meaningful connections between them. In this way, learning is reinforced as the interconnections between these ideas are reinforced conceptually.
