Tutoring Experience

For six months, I tutored a few Year 11 and 10 students independently through their GCSEs. It was a great learning opportunity for me, and it gave me experience in teaching and the most effective ways to communicate. It allowed me to understand that everyone learns in different ways, and your job as a teacher is to find the best way to engage your students. Furthermore, I now have a greater appreciation for planning and preparation, as it is crucial to manage your time when you have a large workload. Another major lesson I acquired was adapting to uncomfortable situations. One of my students asked me to teach them English, which isn't one of my stronger subjects, but through extra planning and asking friends, I was able to provide lessons that suited their needs. Additionally, teaching allowed me to express creativity by offering incentives and finding different ways to motivate and engage my students. One way in which I did this was at the end of a topic, we would play Kahoot, and if they got all the questions right or beat me, they would get a reward. I would also have surprise questions throughout the lesson to keep them on their toes. Finally, being a tutor taught me that putting effort into your work pays off as the students benefit more and you get the enjoyment of seeing your students progress. I believe this is a universal rule that can be applied to any line of work.

Tutoring Approach

The most enticing part of teaching is the human aspect. Every student has a unique perspective, and a teacher’s job is to engage them with that perspective in mind. I aspire to be creative and interactive with my teaching and to always try to innovate and improve.
