Hello! My name is Avishan, I am a data engineer with a background in physics, and I am very passionate about everything physics and mathematics related. I have 9 years of teaching and tutoring experience, and have helped dozens of students excel in their exams.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or if you'd like to book lessons.

Tutoring Experience

Prior to starting my physics degree at university, I worked as a teaching assistant/tutor at a secondary school during my gap year. During my time teaching at a school, I worked as a TA, tutored students on an individual basis, but was also responsible for occasionally teaching small classes. Aside from classroom responsibilities, I accompanied students on school trips, and also was a mentor to a group of Year 11 pupils, having helped them with GCSE revision every week. I gave tips and guidance regarding organisation, reviewed mock exam results and discussed post-16 options with them. I also have SEN teaching experience, having worked with SEN pupils from years 7 to 11.

I continued tutoring whilst at university, as well as after graduating, as I love having the opportunity to show students how exciting learning can really be!

Tutoring Approach

I usually tend to approach lessons by going through the background of the topic in focus and a few worked examples before giving students questions to answer themselves and going through worked solutions. Independent practice is a key part of becoming stronger in a subject, and the more a student practices, the better they will get, and this is a truly rewarding feeling. Throughout lessons, I work with a highly friendly, approachable and patient approach to tutoring, as it is vital to ensure that my students feel comfortable to ask questions on whatever topic they may have difficulties with.

Furthermore, I aim to be as concise in my explanations as possible and I like to break down problems into manageable chunks. For example, I encourage students to underline keywords in questions and, particularly in maths and science, to draw diagrams to help them visualise problems. When it comes to exam technique I teach students precisely how to answer certain styles of question to score full marks and show as much working wherever possible. This is not only a very important skill to have to get good grades, but it will help them develop more of an understanding of the problems they are solving.
