Benjamin

I am 27 and am originally from Singapore and have a mixed ethnic background (1/2 Hungarian 1/2 Chinese). I grew up in Singapore, and moved to the UK at age 21 for further education. I am currently a Medical student at the University of Manchester. Since graduating high school in Singapore, I went through military service for 2 years. Coming out of that, I went into academia and have been immersed in the academic world since. I thoroughly enjoy obtaining knowledge, and my diverse range of degrees (physics, biomedical engineering, and medicine) shows my passion for obtaining knowledge in a variety of fields and professions. I am currently studying to be a Doctor, but enjoy spending time on my hobbies in my free time. This includes music, sports, and cooking.

Tutoring Experience

I have experience teaching and interacting with kids since young. In high school, I volunteered at a school, teaching both dis-abled and abled kids maths and English. At University, both at University College London and at the University of Manchester, I took roles of student mentors and ambassadors. These roles required me to be responsible for 10+ first year university students, both as a role in signposting, and helping with any academic needs. Through these roles, I was able to help and teach first year university students in the topics I was studying such as university level maths, physics, and medicine.

Beyond this, one privilege I have is having the experience of being taught by many different tutors from age 14. I was tutored across a variety of subjects, from Spanish to Physics, and therefore I was able to observe, learn, and adopt the different methods and styles of different tutors. I believe this is a large advantage when it is me who tutors, as I can adjust the teaching style and skills (from those I have observed) to suit the student's needs and style. Furthermore, the wide range of topics I have covered at university level (fundamental maths, theoretical physics, philosophy, engineering, medicine) has provided me with a very unique skillset, and this experience in the world of academia has taught me what it demands, in terms of knowledge, dedication, and focus. Furthermore, because of the diverse topics I have studied at university level, I have experienced a wide range of entrance examinations (GCSE, IB, UKCAT, BMAT, SAT, ACT, Interviews) and have successfully gotten into a wide range of courses, which has taught me what it takes to succeed in academia.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching style is variable, depending on the needs and style of the student.
My general approach is to offer guidance and have open discussions, to allow for the student to critically think and reach conclusions by themselves. My approach is very holistic, as I like to provide background and supplementary information for the student to truly understand why the answer is what it is, and why the method of getting to that answer is appropriate. If the student needs, I will provide background reading, or further reading if they are interested, or it seems necessary to enhance their learning.
