Billy

I am a doctor and trainee surgeon at Oxford John Radcliffe Hospital, a graduate of MB BCh Medicine with distinction and honours, and a graduate of BSc Pharmacology with distinction and honours. I hold a higher degree in education and am an associate clinical tutor for the University of Oxford Medical School. I studied Maths, Chemistry, Biology and English Language at Hills Road College in Cambridge, and am passionate about languages, cooking and travel. I am a published physician who has presented nationally and internationally, with a passion for surgery, and have passed the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons examination with a score in the top 1% of the country.

Tutoring Experience

I have developed my teaching experience initially through 1:1 teaching of junior medical students while at medical school and discovered my flair for education when I set up my university’s first surgical skills course. I have developed a mobile application for medical students, supporting them passing their final examinations, which has been tested and the results presented internationally. I am now responsible for teaching examination revision nationally and am running a course for final year medical students to pass their finals examinations. I teach nationally for The Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. Working as a full-time hospital doctor enables me to hone my communication and problem solving every day, ensuring I continue as a top-class tutor with my skills continually developing. My passion for teaching is lastly demonstrated by my completion of a PGCert in Medical Education.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching approach is flexible and will depend on each learner and the style of teaching they excel most with. I will initially have conversations with all new tutees in order to ascertain our goals, the specifics of the subject and exam board, and the timeline that we are working with. I will then run interactive objective-driven sessions with continual explanation and questions and answers. We will work toward short-term goals and achieve and surpass long-term goals in the process.

In addition to teaching the content needed to excel in their exams, I will also teach the tutee how to manage their time well, how to focus and how to set and achieve goals, encouraging them to develop skills that they can tailor and nurture to excel now and in the future.
