I originally went to University to study Journalism as I was interested in writing. After a year, I decided that this wasn’t where I wanted my career to go; I changed to an English Language and Literature degree.
During my degree, I spent time working on various youth projects and found that working with children was what I wanted to do. After working in industry for a few years, I went back to University to complete my PGCE in Secondary English.
I still work with charitable organisations in my spare time working with young people in various environments. Over the previous summers, I have worked for the NCS project as a Wave Leader- mentoring both staff and students- a very rewarding experience.
I am my eleventh year of teaching and currently teach in County Durham. I work with students from year 7 to year 11 and teach all abilities and specialise in underachieving male students. I am also a Key Stage 3 lead.
I am currently teaching the AQA English Language and Literature syllabus, I also assess for the exam board enhancing my own understanding of the examinations. I am also familiar with other exam boards such as EdExcel, Pearson, Eduqas and WJEC.
I initially start my sessions with getting to know the pupils and finding areas of focus through a diagnostic test. After this initial assessment, I will come up with a plan, along with my pupil, of how to move forward and improve grading.
I work for a minimum of one hour with the pupils. I often leave a piece of homework, I encourage parents to send this to me so I can look at the areas of development before the next lesson.
I am very approachable and work closely with the parents of students that I tutor in order to gain the best results possible from them. I make everything crystal clear to my students and differentiate lessons to make the subject as accessible as possible.
I am pleased to say that I have positive relationships with all of the students, and parents, that I tutor and have seen some excellent results from the hard work put into the sessions.
