I am a qualified Primary School teacher with several years experience. I studied Music at Durham University before staying on to complete my PGCE and MA in Education at the same institution.
I have six years of experience teaching in primary schools in the UK across both Key Stages. I have experience of working with children with a variety of learning needs and those who require support/challenge in a variety of areas. I have experience of teaching phonics.
As a starting point I will gauge the needs of the student through talking to the parents and then through meeting with the student in the first session. I would like to find out about the student's interests and likes and dislikes. I encourage regular communication with parents to discuss how things are going at school, progress and learning areas that require support. If required, I may provide small and short tasks for students to complete between sessions such as practising some maths facts from memory (nothing time consuming, students and parents need a break from this too!). Learning should be centred around the student so am prepared to change approach/try new strategies and activities/games as needed to engage and support the student as best as I can. I understand the importance of 'hands on' learning, as well as learning that is relevant to the child's experiences, and I look to incorporate these whenever possible. Additionally, repetition and revisiting skills and knowledge previously introduced is crucial for learning so tutoring sessions will build upon previous sessions, revisiting knowledge and skills as needed to ensure the student has a good understanding before moving on.
