Welcome! I'm Cassie, and I've been teaching English for more than 8 years. I'm a subject expert – with a BA, MA, and DPhil – who believes passionately that improving our understanding of language and literature is something we can all benefit from.
Whether you're looking for someone to help your child engage more enthusiastically with a KS3 syllabus or refine their GCSE exam technique, support and stretch your own understanding of A level texts, or even for a guide to navigate the challenges of university-level study, if you choose me you'll be choosing a tutor who's warm, personable, passionate, and reliable.
I currently teach English at a selective independent girls secondary school in Oxford, and have held similar positions at Abingdon School and Lady Eleanor Holles, the latter of which has been named Sunday Times London Independent School of the Year (2025) and The Good Schools Guide Independent Girls School of the Year (2021).
Before that, I was a Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Oxford, from 2016 to 2020.
My approach to teaching is founded on a blend of rigour, supportiveness, and enthusiasm. I set high standards for the students I work with, but ensure that I provide carefully personalised and sensitive support so that they're able to meet them. Each student has different strengths, and I see it as my responsibility to draw out, celebrate, and refine those strengths – rather than training them to produce cookie-cutter responses or model answers.
Nonetheless, my work with students is also informed by the latest developments in educational theory, and grounded in established principles of good teaching. My lessons are carefully sequenced, sensitively differentiated for ability, and designed to improve confidence and enjoyment alongside academic performance.
I believe that students perform best in English when they appreciate how and why a text came to be written, and a distinctive aspect of my teaching is therefore my ability to weave in illuminating contexts and comparisons, drawn from my broad and deep knowledge of the subject.
