I have always loved English and, in addition to my previous teaching and tuition work, I have experience of freelance writing.
I am almost fully booked but will have some availability for online tuition from June 2023.
Having qualified as a teacher in July 2003, I have substantial experience and have taught in a variety of secondary schools in Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey. Recently, I spent two years teaching in one of the highest achieving state schools in Hampshire which OFSTED has regularly rated as 'outstanding'.
In addition, I have taught English as a Foreign Language to French business people in Paris, worked with young people in Southampton who have been excluded from mainstream education and taught basic literacy to unemployed adults in Portsmouth.
Regarding one to one tuition I have tutored several pupils, aged between 10-15, for both mainstream state school exams as well as Common Entrance.
I believe that all learners, whether adults or children, are more likely to achieve their full potential if they are engaged by the lessons, have some input into their tuition programme and understand the final goal. They need to feel comfortable with their tutor and confident in their own abilities. Naturally, this takes time but I aim to start the process from the very first meeting.
People learn in different ways and I aim to ensure my lessons include a variety of activities, such as instruction, reading, written tasks and role play and are delivered via a combination of learning styles. I can also set homework tasks if requested and,for GCSE, can supply and mark practice exam questions.
