I am a graduate with a BSc Geography 1st Class Honours Degree from the University of Sussex. Since 2012 I have taught in an East Sussex secondary school rated as Outstanding by Ofsted (2012 & 2018). In 2016 I began my current role as Geography Head of Curriculum across KS3 and KS4. I also work as a GCSE Geography examiner for AQA. I have a thorough understanding of the 9-1 GCSE syllabus and valuable insight into the marking process. I am extremely adaptable and have worked in various roles alongside my Geography teaching - notably as an Outdoor Pursuits instructor in a secondary school, and as a Music Production tutor in a secure children's home. I am committed to success, highly motivated and approachable. I have a track record of high value-added results with the pupils I teach and tutor.
My hobbies include Indoor Wall Climbing, Mountain Walking and Surfing. My most recent adventure was a Snowdon Summit climb with my wife and 7 year old daughter. My over-arching view is that an outgoing, enthusiastic and motivational approach supports success, and this is a value I bring to both my personal and professional endeavours.
I have taught for 6 years in an East Sussex secondary school rated as Outstanding by Ofsted in both 2012 and 2018. As well as Geography, I have taught KS3 Music and led an Outdoor Pursuits programme for secondary phase pupils. I have tutored GCSE pupils to enhance their personal revision and preparation for GCSE examinations, applying my teaching experience and understanding of the GCSE course as a result of my examining experience.
I focus on developing a positive and trusting relationship between tutor and learner. It is important to develop a clear overview of strengths and identify prioritised areas for academic development with a very targeted and personalised approach. I have good understanding of the increase in anxiety that many pupils experience coping with challenging GCSE study since the recent reform in curriculum. As such cases are common, I have good experience adapting my approach to support, empower and reduce stress levels in my learners - promote self-confidence and paving the way to build deeper understanding of the subject.
Any abilities and ages welcome with the aim to improve general understanding of the subject, specific topic areas, case studies or concepts or revision and exam techniques for an upcoming exam.
