Cindy

Online English Lessons

Hey there! I’m Cindy at Literature is Magic Tutoring. I provide private online tutoring services to students studying the KS3, GCSE, and A-Level English curriculum, inc. adult and casual learners.

English was my favourite subject at school. I connected with it on a personal level, and it excited and enhanced me as a person. Yet I still struggled with certain aspects of the curriculum, from creating a revision plan to knowing what I did well against what I needed to improve, and learning the ‘hack’ to obtaining the highest grades to prove my excellence in English. Looking back on it now, I was a student who needed a tutor. Today, I’m here to be that person to younger members of society. I’d love to make a difference in a student’s life by refining or rehabilitating their relationship with English and instilling some of the magic I found in the study of literature.

Tutoring Experience

Having graduated university with a 2:1 degree in English Literature, I have the expertise to tutor students at earlier stages of study. I have also studied all 4 exam boards offered to students in England (inc. AQA, OCR, Edexcel, and WJEC). This has given me a firm grasp on what’s expected of a student at their level. Besides the administrative aspects, I have a surprisingly strong memory of what it was like to study English at school, which enables me to put myself in a student’s shoes in order to get through to them.

Between the years 2017 and 2019 I volunteered as an assistant at a few schools where I guided and assisted young people with their school work. It was a fulfilling experience and a student I worked with was awarded for academic progress. I was informed by the headteacher that I encouraged confidence in my students and that they would await our next meeting with happiness and excitement.

I also have experience mentoring students aged 16-19 through an online platform known as Brightside. In this role, I mentored students on many topics, such as their present experiences with education, future prospects and pathways, and university. By the end of each programme, my students were bolder, brighter, and all the more excited for what the future held for them. Similarly, I was informed that my students felt very happy and well-guided after working with me.

It means the world to me when I am able to genuinely inspire confidence and growth in my students. I know how integral it can be to a young person’s future, to develop meaningful and impactful relationships and experiences during education. I hope to emulate this in every experience going forward.

Tutoring Approach

Due to demand, I provide a service that focuses on improving attainment. I believe that a big part of doing well in any subject is connecting with a subject on a personal level. In my approach to tutoring, this forms the foundation of how I create a plan for my student; whether or not they’re having a good time with English tells me what kind of support they need and how I can best help them. I use my expertise in English, as well as my knowledge of the curriculum, to observe and discern level and ability in order to create a progress plan that encourages positive change and growth. On a personal front, I’m an advocate for trauma-informed teaching practices. I take a caring approach and ensure that my students feel seen, listened to, validated, and supported.

I’m also passionate about illuminating the magic of English, hence the name of my service! Studying English boasts an invaluable skill set which can stay with a student long after schooling and education and be used in any context of one’s life going forward. Skills such as observation and analysis, critical thinking, empathy, and insight into the human experience and condition. These skills build self-awareness and can create powerful individuals, from visionaries to humanitarians and leaders, people who steer humanity in the right direction. This ethos underpins my passion for English and my demeanour towards tutoring the subject.
