I have been a full time Maths teacher for nearly 21 years now, 11 years of that have been as a head of department. I have tutored on and off for the entire time. I enjoy tutoring as it gives me the opportunity to get to know pupils on a one to one level and guide them through exams on a more personal level. I believe in making Maths 'easy' and accessible where possible.
Tutoring is now my main source of income, with my role in the classroom now part time. Depending on the level of Maths required, usually tutoring is done through a one to one problem solving approach, by which we work through problems together in order to improve weak areas. Often tutoring is used as a tool for exam preparation, in which case I will usually work through past paper problems on required topics to familiarise the students with the style and format of the questions. This has proved a successful technique both in and outside of the classroom but this can be adapted for the individual needs of the student.
I currently tutor a wide variety of students, from KS3 through to A level, Core Maths, Further Maths GCSE and Statistics GCSE. I have mature students as well as young people and am currently enjoying the variety that this brings.
