My name is Daisy. I am an undergraduate studying Marine Biology at Exeter University in Penryn Cornwall. I was born in Berkshire but moved with my Mum, Dad and younger sister to North Devon 12 years ago. It is here I discovered my love for the Sea and coastline. Hence I have spent a lot of my life looking in rock pools or if the waves are good surfing. I love camping holidays or snorkelling with Turtles in Cyprus, just about my favourite experience ever. I play Hockey for a team in North Devon. I am a massive Formula 1 fan with tickets booked for my first Grand Prix at Silverstone next year where I will be wearing my prized possession, a Mercedes F1 cap signed by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. I really look forward to spending time with my friends and family especially my lovely sister and our mad Springer spaniel Mabel and when I can get home I enjoy driving my Fiat 500 called Bella. When not studying I relax with a good book and I just, through necessity, discover that I quite like cooking a full Roast dinner for 12 other undergraduates on our second weekend.
I achieved 100% for my Non Exam Assessment (NEA) submission for A Level Geography. My Tutor asked me to provide advice to his Year 1 students to help them prepare for their own projects which I did at college over a number of classroom sessions. He has kept a copy of my NEA for future use.
I also hosted several afternoon revision sessions for candidates who were struggling with biology question answering techniques; I planned presentations on crucial topics, one to one assistance, IT presentations as well as leading group activities
This was a hugely gratifying process as I was able to help friends/pupils in need and deepen my general understanding and knowledge of A-level biology topics.
My previous work experiences have included front of house service and reception for a hotel/restaurant as well as waitress/barista service at a separate tearoom. As front of house it was my responsibility to train all the new staff members – to do this I created checklist sheets for new staff to follow to make their first weeks less overwhelming .
After working in the pub/restaurant I changed to working as a barista in a local tearoom. Before leaving for university I was placed in charge of teaching a younger member of staff how to operate the machinery as my replacement.
Outside my academic studies I have worked with a local primary school assisting with an after-school rock pooling club. Working closely with a teacher I have helped the young group understand more about our local environment.
I was asked to represent my A-level college at promotional fairs - this involved meeting students wishing to study geography. I spoke to prospective students and parents explaining curriculum details and general College information.
For the last 2 years I have coached an Under 14s mixed Hockey squad every week during the season. This involved planning and delivering training and going to tournaments with both boys and girls teams. I realised quite early on that I was working with a group who had varying degrees of experience, ambition and attention. By considerate well planned coaching we achieved great success. When I left for University I received a presentation trophy from the team and parents.
I genuinely enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and would cherish the opportunity to help in any way I can.
Through my experience as a hockey coach I believe that when learning new techniques and skills it is important to lead that process with kindness and patience. All students learn at different paces and have different learning requirements and therefore I will always adapt any lessons for each person to match their specific needs. Overall I always want to provide a safe and fun learning experience to improve their knowledge but also increase their confidence in that subject.
