English and History Tuition in Hove

I have lived and worked in Brighton and Hove all of my life. I studied English literature and Media at Sussex University and was involved in the Arts for a number of years, writing creatively as a playwright.
I first began working with students with additional needs and graduated into managerial roles supporting students struggling to attend school for a variety of diverse reasons.
I then took the decision to train as a teacher after gaining a Masters degree in literature, and taught History at a large school in Hove for a number of years, before being promoted to source and set up a new sociology department for sixth form students, which I then taught alongside A level Law.
I then gained a position ar Bhasvic and continued to teach sociology, alongside my new career as a private tutor, which is a combination of face to face and online, as per the request of the client.
I am a fully trained and accredited teacher, with enhanced DBS status and references available on request.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 15 years experience as a trained teacher and hold an MA in English literature through the University of Sussex. I qualified initially as a history teacher through the GTP programme and have since also specialised in Law and Sociology.
I now work as a tutor extensively in a variety of humanities subjects, but predominantly english language and literature across multiple exam boards at ks3 and 4.
I am currently employed at BHASVIC teaching OCR sociology as an A level. I have taken part in two Ofsted inspections during my career and have also been judged as outstanding in a role as a teacher mentor in conjunction with Sussex University, once being nominated in a teacher of the year competition by my students.
I am currently coming to the end of a successful partnership with Farlington school in Horsham, supporting an A level sociology student. Prior to teaching, I specialised in behaviour management and supporting students currently not in school.

Tutoring Approach

As a private tutor, I believe that confidence is key. If a student feels able to articulate their ideas and to see real progress, that confidence and the skills they develop will help not just in English, but across all of their subjects. They will feel empowered, helping them to thrive and be successful.
I also believe that knowing not just what to write in exams, but how to signpost that knowledge; to essentially write for the examiner, is a vital skill. This is evident from my work at Bhasvic, which currently has the joint highest exam results for sociology across the country, in large part, I believe, because our students know what the examiner is looking for.
