I have been teaching for 13 years, and working in schools for 16. I currently teach in Year 5, though have also taught from Years 2-6. I am currently Key Stage Lead, Senior Leadership Team member and Maths lead in my school. I have been tutoring for many years and have tutored pupils aged 5-11, tailoring lessons to reflect the needs of the child. I am able to tutor Writing, Grammar, Maths and Reading for pupils in Years 2 to 6.
Having spent 3 years as a teaching assistant, I completed my Primary PGCE with a specialism in Maths (July 2009) and immediately took up a full-time teaching position at a very good Warrington school. I am in my fifteenth year of teaching and currently hold the roles of Key Stage leader, Maths co-coordinator and member of the senior leadership team in a school in Warrington. I also have experience of international teaching, having recently taught at Dulwich College, Shanghai, where I taught Year 3.
In my several years of tutoring, I have found that sessions often take one of two forms:
1) If your child is low on confidence in Maths/English or is struggling to keep pace with others in the class, our sessions would involve working hard to ensure the 'basics' are as secure as possible. This could mean securing knowledge of place value and 4 rules in maths, or securing knowledge of basic punctuation and grammar vocabulary in English.
2) If your child is confident in English/Maths, our sessions may focus on solidifying curriculum understanding and working on broadening their knowledge through problem solving/reasoning activities in maths, or looking at how to apply punctuation and manipulate sentences in different ways in English.
My 16 years of working with children have taught me that a lack of confidence is often the biggest barrier when it comes learning. If a child lacks confidence then they will struggle to try new things out of fear of being wrong. If a teacher can develop a 'growth mindset' in their pupils and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones and push themselves, increased progress is never far behind. All I ask from my students is that they try their best and are willing to try new things.
