I have 30 years experience as a tutor, working with young people with wide ranging abilities. I am currently completing a MA in History at Lancaster University. I also work during summer and early autumn for National Citizens Service as an Enterprise and Creative Work shop teacher.
After gaining a BA(Hons) in History in 1987 i qualified as a teacher a year later after completing a PGCE at Lancaster.
I taught history and economics at GCSE and A level: I also taught on a variety of courses including; politics, law and geography all to A level standard.
I have also worked in an educational advisory capacity for a regional TEC and the construction industry.
Until 2006 i worked for Lancashire County Council as an advisor and project coordinator in adult learning for the Learning and Skills Council.
At KS3/4 using the curriculum as guidance, I work with the students to develop their understanding of the core requirements of the units studied and the broad aims of the course they are studying. I also like to work with the students in identifying their learning styles in order to tailor learning to their specific skills set.
I also work on improving examination technique using past papers to assist in preparation for subsequent examinations.
I encourage students to express ideas and apply their knowledge to the requirements of the courses being studied.
I also encourage students to consider techniques such as Mindfulness to help them focus on maximum attainment.
At KS5 i usually adopt a tutorial/seminar approach to assess gaps in knowledge and understanding and adopt strategies to address the issues raised: encouraging individuals to begin approaching their studies in a methodical and pragmatic manner with a view to broadening their core knowledge and ofcourse achieving success in examinations.
I also work with students helping them prepare for examinations and interviews. This aspect of my tuition has increased considerably over the last five years, as competition for places at Russell Group Universities has become more intense.
Over the 30 years I have provided tuition my students have never failed to achieve their objectives.
My work with students on interview preparation and career guidance has proven very successful, helping students focus on key issues and clarify career objectives.
I have worked with several students recently on Graduate Apprentice entry to the Property Profession.
I know that excellent tuition works and the students I have worked with over the years are testament to this view. The tuition I provide is bespoke, it is entirely tailored to meet the needs of the tutee.
