Online Maths and English Lessons

I have worked for the past 20+ years in childcare settings ranging from school classrooms, Autism bases, Early Years settings, as a childminder and as an NVQ assessor. My degree is on childcare and Education but I have also attended a lot of additional training and done a lot of additional research especially in the field of Dyslexia.

In 2015 I had my first book published on supporting children with reading and spelling difficulties.
4 years ago, I wrote a correspondence course on supporting children with dyslexia.

I have spoken on the local and on international radio about the work I do as a tutor and own a tutoring company that was set up to franchise in 2019. The goal of the company is to strive to offer the very best tutoring through raising confidence as well as knowledge in the subject.

I have also send out regular emails offering parents additional advice on how to support their children with Maths and English and have set up a Facebook group in the recent weeks offering support to parents when their children are struggling with their homework.

Through these I also keep parents up to date on any additional courses that I am running.

I have three children of my own, my oldest is now 24 and working full time and my son (23) is in his final year of university after a gap year in Australia. My youngest daughter is doing a degree in History at UCL after taking time of to do an internship in Parliament and then becoming a Public Affairs Assistant for Shelter.

Tutoring Experience

Over the past 20+ years I have worked in many educational settings (both mainstream and with special needs children). I have also worked as an NVQ assessor in Early Years Education.

For the past 8 years my main employment has been as tutor and my reputation built up my business very quickly. I also own an online membership group supporting others in growing successful tutoring businesses.

I now have a number of tutors working for me so if I'm not able to take on the commitment I have someone who uses my techniques, is DBS checked and fantastic feedback, that I can recommend with confidence.

Tutoring Approach

Prior to the Coronavirus lock down all lessons took place in the comfort of your own home, saving you the inconvenience of travelling. However, with circumstances as they are, we have moved online and now offer the same fantastic service, online.

I am a strong believer that when people are both relaxed and interested they will be more able to learn.

The studying and research that I have done over the years also clearly demonstrates that people have many learning styles, and also benefit from a range of approaches to learning. Therefore, I would aim to use creative ideas, games and activities to assist the learner with their learning (appropriate to their age and ability) again to encourage the child so that they not only enjoy the activities but are also in a better mind set to enjoy learn from the lessons.

I always relate the lessons to something which is of interest to the learner (for example if I was writing a lesson plan for a child about writing stories who had a particular interest in cars, we would use that as a starting point and perhaps use a car as a focal point / key character within the story.

I would be keen to receive feedback from both the learner (and parent where applicable) and use this to guide the direction that the course of lessons take, ensuring the lessons were flexible and meet that individual learners need, whilst working alongside what the child is working on in their school classroom.

With adults my intentions will still be that of trying to make the lessons enjoyable and using a lot of (card, dice, board), etc)games and activities in order to encourage a relaxed atmosphere and approach so that you are in a better frame of mind to learn.

With students doing their GCSE's the lessons revolve very much around creating mind maps, working through examples and focused games which you get you thinking about both the answers and the methods. The student will also be given handouts to assist them with their revision. During the initial lesson, we will talk about the areas the student wants to focus to help with revision.

If requested I will email a lesson plan prior to the day of the lesson so that the (parents and/or) student is aware of what will be studied during the lesson.

Please note: I only have very limited space available, so if you are interested, please do get in touch to sort something out as soon as possible.

If you need to cancel with less than 24 hours notice the lesson fee will not be refundable as this slot will have been allocated for your use.
