I graduated in 2021 from Oxford University with a First Class degree in Classics. I placed first in my college (Corpus Christi) and I was in the top 5 of a year of c. 120 students. I have now trained as a Classics teacher at a secondary school in Holland Park, achieving a distinction in my PGCE from the University of Buckingham. I teach Ancient Greek, Latin and Classical Civilisation to pupils aged 11-18, and I have successfully taken pupils through public exams in all subjects. I have received training and written extensively on cognitive psychology and pedagogical techniques, and I now use these regularly to bolster my own teaching. I also have had considerable experience teaching online.
In school I studied Ancient Greek, Latin, Maths and Further Maths at Pre-U, achieving D2 D2 D1 D3 respectively (A* A* A* A). I also have 11 A*s at GCSE (Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Spanish, History, Music, Ancient Greek).
I have been passionate about the learning of Ancient Greek and Latin from an early age. After changing school at the age of 13 and no longer being offered Greek, I chose to have one hour of external tuition per week and was able to take my ancient Greek GCSE a year early, achieving 99% across the four papers. Following this I took up Latin, and after one year of tuition I had reached a sufficient standard to begin the Latin Pre-U course. So, I am aware of the enormous impact which private tuition can have on one’s learning.
In addition to the time spent teaching in a school, I have also built up over 500 hours of tutoring experience. I regularly tutor children aged 9-18 in Ancient Greek, Latin and Classical Civilisation, and I also have considerable experience tutoring English as a foreign language, primary level English, and Common Entrance. I am familiar with a range of different exam boards and syllabi.
I believe that it is important to tailor teaching techniques to the needs of the individual, and, in this way, make these languages as accessible as possible. Particularly for younger students I strive to make lessons as interactive and fun as possible, designing posters, recording videos, and telling stories. For older students working towards an exam, I structure sessions with this in mind, working closely with the exam board specifications and past papers.
