I was born and live in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I am married with 2 grown up children, both of which have successfully completed their education and are at University - my daughter is studying Geography at the University of Cambridge and my son is studying Fine Art at Kingston University. My husband is also a teacher and has taught geography and geology for 33 years. I love to travel, visiting new places at home and abroad. I am an avid supporter of my local football team and enjoy working and gardening. I am a keen reader, of fact and fiction and enjoy the cinema and theatre. I volunteer at my local park run and have been a Governor at my local primary school for almost 15 years.
I have taught in mainstream education for 32 years. Initially as a History teacher in an 11-16 school and for the last 29 years in a high performing selective grammar school in West Yorkshire. I have extensive experience of teaching History across Key Stage Three, Four and Five. My specialism lies in GCSE and A level history. I have also taught Geography at Key stage three and four and have taught a number of GCSE Geography groups. Most recently I have also taught A level Politics. I have been an examiner for AQA for 27 years and am currently an Assistant Principal Examiner for GCSE History. I have also worked as a GCSE Examiner for OCR; as an A level examiner for AQA and am currently also an A level history examiner for Pearson Edexcel. I have previously moderated coursework for GCSE and am currently expanding my exam work to include NEA moderation and to work for Cambridge International. My results at GCSE and A level are consistently high.
I am able to offer tuition for all GCSE History and A level History specifications, for GCSE Geography ( AQA) and A level Politics (AQA). I am also available to offer tuition at Key Stage Three for English, History and Geography.
I believe that building relationships with students is absolutely essential for success. I wish to foster these relationships with tutees in the same way that I have done this with my students over my career. My extensive experience in the classroom means that I am well versed in strategies to get the best out of students, to convey knowledge in an interesting and innovative way but also to understand how to apply this knowledge to exam techniques. I am extremely well versed in the exam requirements for GCSE and A level, across a range of exam boards and believe that assessment and feedback is absolutely essential to making progress and succeeding in exams. At the core of my teaching is a desire to enthuse and inspire students with a love of their subjects and learning.
