I am currently a medical student at the University of Cologne in Germany. I received a First Class Master's degree in Psychology from Birkbeck College and a First Class Honour's Bachelor's degree in French and Russian from Oxford University. I specialise in Modern language tutoring, specifically French, German and Russian, and am also able to tutor in Latin up to A Level and Maths up to GCSE or IGCSE level. I also offer Oxbridge preparation for language interviews and aptitude tests.
Alongside work and studying I enjoy reading 20th century crime fiction, singing and playing the violin, and spending time outdoors.
My teaching experience is wide-ranging. Throughout my school years I volunteered weekly in a school for children with physical and mental disabilities where I spent much of my time engaging with the children on a 1 to 1 basis, helping them focus on tasks and work through specific challenges. On my year abroad I was an au pair for a family of 4 young children in France where I taught them English and helped them with their daily school work. I also gave private English lessons to children while I was studying in Russia. There I also gained experience teaching adults, assisting in classes that adhered to the CEFR model of language teaching. I helped my students enjoy learning but also focus on their specific targets of passing their exams at B1 level. I found this experience particularly rewarding as it informed my own methods of learning as a modern languages student.
For me tutoring is about giving the student the chance to enjoy their studies so that they can work to the best of their abilities. I believe that a happy and inspired student does better than one who is indifferent to what they are learning. Therefore, every lesson I give is uniquely tailored to the individual in question so that they can get the most out of my teaching and their studies.
However I do believe that mastering the basics, especially in languages and maths, gives all students the building blocks they need to take their studies in the direction they want to go, whether that be reading literature, engaging in political discussion, or applying theoretical formulas to practical situations. For example, in my language teaching I lay emphasis on a thorough understanding of grammar so that the student has the tools to tackle any written or spoken challenge that they may face. I also understand that, though exams are not the be all and end all, they play a large role in the British school system so I am well versed in the techniques and structures that are required at exam level and I make sure that my students are the best prepared that they can be to achieve their goals.
