Online Latin and Greek (Ancient) Teacher

I hold graduate degrees from the University of Chicago (PhD in Comparative Literature, 2022) and Oxford (master's in Classics, 2015). My first degree was a BA in Classics and Arabic (first-class honours) from Oxford, where I received several undergraduate prizes for academic achievement. I am currently working as a freelance tutor and academic copy editor, while also completing my own academic research projects. I am passionate about Latin, Greek, and Arabic, and I greatly enjoy teaching them at all levels. More generally, I am an easygoing individual with interests in music, sport and travel.

Tutoring Experience

I have a wide range of teaching experience both in higher education and in tutoring students at GCSE and A Level. Between 2022 and 2024, I worked as a teaching fellow at the University of Chicago. In this capacity I taught Greek, Latin, and Arabic literary texts to undergraduates, predominantly in translation. I have also spent a year as a Classics teacher at a small liberal arts college in the US. This involved teaching Latin and Greek from beginner to degree level, as well as courses in Classical Civilization. I delivered this instruction in a variety of settings, from one-on-one tutorials to small and medium-size classes. My tutoring experience has ranged from GCSE students to adult casual learners.

As for teaching materials, I have used the Cambridge Latin Course, Wheelocks Latin, John Taylor's Greek textbooks, and Reading Greek. I have also guided individual students through unadapted original texts.

Tutoring Approach

My starting point is the principle that no two students are the same, and that meeting the needs of any student demands a sensitive, flexible approach from the tutor. I begin by seeking to find out what the student broadly wants to gain from my tuition. Then, in the first few lessons, I try out various techniques and seek feedback from the student on each, while also forming my own judgments about their effectiveness. This enables me to arrive at the best possible formula for realising their aspirations. So, my approach will vary from one student to another, but typically I find that regular testing is helpful and that frequent recapping of previous lessons is essential.
