Computer Studies / I.T. Lessons in Shifnal

I have been interested in computing from the age of nine, and have been working in the IT industry since I graduated from University. As I progressed 'through the ranks' mentoring and leading junior team members became a significant - and one of the most enjoyable - parts of my job. I love the industry, love talking about it, and enjoy seeing others journeys to success as a result of my mentoring.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 30 years industry experience. In the past I also lectured a course at my local Further Education college, teaching IT to group of various levels. My tutoring experience is more recent, mainly at A level and equivalent. However, my career in has led to me mentoring team members for many years, almost always on a 1-2-1 basis, in order to help them further their careers.

Tutoring Approach

My belief is that my extensive industry experience, coupled with years of tutoring and mentoring, work hand in hand to deliver both halves of what a student needs: the knowledge and the presentation of material.

Tutoring is a one-on-one endeavour. I first find out what areas a student may need help with - which may be 'all of it'. I then ensure that I am familiar with the syllabus from exam board or school in question. Then we can start.

During a session I am interested in dialogue and engagement. For example, I could draw the network diagram for you, but it's better if you draw it yourself, or I could write the code and show you, but it's better you type it in yourself. Further, I constantly encourage dialogue with students, always checking in to encourage active listening.

Finally, I ensure that each session has a written delivery, usually a presentation deck. Often I will have created these before the session, but I commit to creating those notes after the time if that is required.
