Ian

Hi! I’m a friendly, patient, and fun person, with a love of languages ancient and modern. I’ve lived in France for six years, as well as lots of other European cities during a long career in finance. I have an Oxford degree in Classics and Modern Languages, and CELTA certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Tutoring Experience

Since September 2017, I've taught school-age pupils from Reigate Grammar, Caterham, St. Olave's, Tiffin, Hinchley Wood, Ardingly and several others. My adult pupils have come from different sectors, including finance and architecture & planning, as well as one student who recently graduated from Durham university.

Tutoring Approach

Different subjects need different approaches: in modern languages (including EFL) the emphasis is on self-expression, listening, understanding, writing, and for advanced students, getting to know and appreciate the culture and literature. For the classics, it’s all about learning to love the structure of language, the grammar and, of course, later on, some of the most fantastic literature ever written!
