I have over 13 years experience teaching Sociology at both GCSE and A-level. I have worked both in school sixth forms and further education colleges, having been Head of GCSE Sociology in one of my roles. I recently taught in a large FE college in a very successful Sociology Department where the majority of students achieved high grades and am currently Head of Sociology in an independent school. I am also an AQA examiner. My students have described my passion for the subject as infectious and this translates into excellent student results.
I am a subject specialist as I studied Sociology both as an A-level (A grade) and at university (2:1).
I have over thirteen years of experience of teaching A level Sociology to both Year 12 and 13. Teaching the AQA specification, the units I cover are Education, Families and Households, Research Methods, Crime and Deviance and Beliefs in Society. I am also an examiner so well versed with what students are expected to produce under exam conditions.
My various teaching positions have enabled me to gain alot of experience working with more experienced Sociology specialists but also being able to mentor and train new teachers too. I have tutored 1:1 privately for the last five years with great success.
2023 - students I tutored achieved A*/A*/A/A and a B in their final results.
2022 - students I tutored achieved A*/A/A and a B in their final results.
My approach is firstly identifying areas of weakness. I primarily make use of powerpoints, handouts and set homework essay and small mark questions. I am happy to adapt to whatever method suits a student and am often told that I am quite laid back and can make the material easily accessible and understandable. I tend to prefer more discussion based 1:1's and recommend wider reading and documentaries to watch.
