I am a 28 year old passionate and versatile teacher with a 2:1 Master's in Astrophysics, 3 years experience teaching GCSE and 6th form Physics, and 2 years private tutoring experience. Love learning and discussing physics after spending 6 months in the Arctic circle studying space plasmas and the aurora borealis during my degree; I now enjoy imparting that love onto others at all levels! I always discuss the needs of new pupils very carefully and aim to build their confidence in the subject before preparing for exam success. Proud born-and-bred Yorkshireman.

Tutoring Experience

I have 2 years experience teaching both GCSE and 6th form physics in the British International School of Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia from 2021-2023. Also taught year 7-8 science of a term at the school and hosted extracurricular classes focused around preparing for exam success. During this time, I also taught science privately as a tutor for a pupil in Key Stage 3.

In 2020-21 I spent the year teaching 6th form physics at York college, where I obtained my Post-Graduate Certificate in Education in Lifelong Learning. In 2018-19 I spent a year teaching science in English to classes of KS2 students in China.

Academically, I have an upper second class (2:1) integrated Master's Degree in Physics with Planetary and Space Physics. During this time I spent 6 months at the University Centre in Svalbard, in the Arctic circle, where I spent time at the Kjell-Henriksen observatory and at the EISCAT radar facility studying space plasmas and the aurora borealis.

Tutoring Approach

My overall intention with my pupils is to obtain success in exams, whilst also constructing a strong scientific foundation to serve them in future STEM careers. In my experience, students most often struggle in physics and maths due to attempts to rote memorise every aspect. The best way to learn physics is to learn repeated technical processes that recur, in order to develop a physics-oriented mindset. Building that foundation as a budding scientist is, in my opinion, critical to success as a physicist and in exams.

My initial approach is informal but communicative to foster a comfortable learning environment and identify the specific needs of a student. From there, we will focus on shoring up areas of weakness and developing an awareness of typical processes and methodologies for approaching each topic. We can then focus on preparation, which includes looking at past papers to understand the structure, question types, common material, and mark scheme analysis to ensure there will be no surprises during their actual exams. We will also focus secondarily on effective revision techniques and routines to serve them well after exams are finished.
