Hi I am Jake, a professional engineer with a first class masters degree from the University of Oxford. I have 6+ years of tutoring experience in maths, physical sciences, engineering and university admissions. I am a versatile tutor and can teach students of all ages; from GCSE to University level. I am passionate about my subject and like to incorporate my own experience in research and industry to create enjoyable and impactful lessons.
I have 6+ years tutoring experience in maths, physical sciences, Engineering and university admissions. I have tutored on various online platforms and volunteered as an online tutor for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition, I taught an engineering course to 13-15 year olds at the Oxford Royale Academy summer school.
Subjects offered:
- Engineering: A-level, University; I am able to teach all Engineering disciplines. Specialism in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
- Maths, Further Maths: GCSE, A-level, IB, Pre-U & others.
- Physics: GCSE, A-level, IB & others.
- Chemistry: GCSE, A-level, IB & others.
- University admissions tests (PAT, MAT, ESAT & others) and interview preparation.
- Maths & Physics Olympiads.
Although my approach to tutoring depends entirely on the individual needs and learning styles of my students, there are a few key strategies that I follow to ensure my students reach their full potential:
Understanding the student and building a positive relationship:
Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of my students is very important to me, and an essential first step in my tutoring methodology. This step establishes a positive relationship with my students, allows me to tailor lessons to the individual, and ensures lessons are time efficient.
Active learning via engaging examples:
I teach my students via engaging real-world examples and utilise my own experiences in cutting edge research wherever possible. My lessons usually consist of a series of interesting problems that encourage students to apply creative and critical thinking to find a solution. This approach deepens understanding of a topic and makes lessons fun/interesting.
Cognitive re-enforcement:
My job as a tutor is (ultimately) to help students succeed in their exams. I adopt an approach backed by research to ensure students are performing at their best during exam season. Implementing this in lessons is simple and involves weekly cognitive re-enforcement activities of previously covered topics.
Celebrating success and building confidence:
I think the most important and rewarding outcome from private tuition is a new-found confidence in a subject. During lessons, I actively acknowledge and celebrate achievements and help build the confidence of my students.
