I'm James, a qualified Maths teacher with extensive experience in Maths teaching and tuition at all levels from Key Stage 2 to A level, including GCSE and 11 plus exam preparation. I also have experience working with students with autism, ADHD and other special educational needs. In the last academic years I have worked with two GCSE students who went from a grade 2 to a grade 5 and a grade 6 to a grade 9 respectively. I also worked with an A level student who went from an E to a B, and a pupil in Year 8 who was moved to the top set in his school. Prior achievements include working with a year 6 pupil who regained his enthusiasm for Maths (and school in general), and helping a student with complex learning difficulties to pass their GCSE with a grade 4. In the last academic year my GCSE clients went from a grade 2 to a grade 5, a grade 5 to a grade 7 and a grade 3 to a grade 5.
Having been active in teaching and learning throughout life, I completed a PGCE in Maths teaching at Newcastle University in 2016 and since then have worked in a secondary school, a 6th form college, a tuition centre, and privately, helping learners to improve their confidence and ability in Maths. I have also worked as an examiner for Pearson/Edexcel since 2018, marking GCSE Maths scripts. I currently work full time as a Functional Skills and GCSE Maths tutor at a post-16 training provider.
My approach is one that aims to place an emphasis on understanding, problem solving, and picking up on gaps and uncertainties from prior learning. I try to strike a balance between building confidence and stretching students during sessions, and provide practice questions to help cement skills throughout the week. I also try to build a rapport with the learner and their family and am a firm believer that everyone can enjoy Maths with the right conditions!
