Online English and Religious Studies Tutor

Hi there! My name is Jamila, and I am a postgraduate Law student training to become a barrister. I've always been passionate about education and enjoy helping others maximise their potential.

Tutoring Experience

Alongside my studies, I have tutored friends and family on exam and essay skills. This experience has taught me that the current school system cannot afford the 1-1 teaching often needed to secure higher grades. It is becoming increasingly common that students are taught how to pass, rather than how to excel. This leaves a wave of very capable students missing out on the top marks. In addition, a lot of students feel very doubtful about their abilities, lacking crucial confidence. Exams are so stooped in pressure and expectation that it demotivates and scares a lot of students. My experiences tutoring friends in lower years to me has shown that sessions should not just help with content and exam technique, but functional aspects of school such as time management, structuring revision, stress and anxiety surrounding exams. I've been able to harness this into my tutoring with friends and family and am excited now to expand out of my close circle and help other people.

Tutoring Approach

With the key motivation being understanding and alleviating fears, a typical tutoring session with me entails:

1) Breaking down key concepts or gaps in knowledge

2) Going through mark schemes to distinguish what examiners are looking for, and differences between each grade boundary

3) Tips on revision and time management

4) Active recall, use of past papers, and practice questions

5) Tips on essay structure. Learning how to harness skills to pick up as many 'easy' marks as possible

6) Self assessment of your own work! Sometimes difficult, but critical to understanding how your work appears to a third-party

7) Using sample answers to identify improvements

8) Visual, interactive activities to cement difficult concepts

9) Encouragement and understanding

10) Drawing up tailored revision plans or timetables

It is very important to note that every student is different and each session is absolutely tailored to the needs of each individual.
