Tutoring English is more than just a career choice; it’s my passion and I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for the study of literature and language with my students. I have been tutoring privately for the last fifteen years and have sound experience in coaching SATS and GCSE students through the pressure of their examinations. I tailor my lessons on the specific needs of each pupil and enjoy creating worksheets and games to cater for their individual learning style.
I am committed to helping students achieve their highest academic potential by developing strong reading, writing and analytical skills.
A devourer of books; I also write my own! Having specialised in English and Writing for Children in my Masters degree, I am currently completing a series of novels that formed the basis of my dissertation.

Tutoring Experience

I am 38 years old and graduated from the University of Winchester with a 2.1 Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a First Class Masters Degree with distinction in English and Writing for Children. Studying English Language and Literature at a university level has equipped me with a strong analytical mind and provided me with an in-depth understanding of the various critical approaches towards examining literature. My understanding of how language is arranged and built into imagery, the effects of this and the response that it elicits from the reader are all transferable skills which make me a well established English tutor. Whether my students are studying 'Macbeth', 'Of Mice and Men', 'An Inspector Calls' or a varied range of poetry, my degree has qualified me to confidently analyse the essential themes and ideas; the social, historical and cultural context; the power of language and its role in creating layered meaning within the text, and articulate it to my students.

I have been a successful English tutor for last fifteen years. All of my students have improved dramatically in their studies with ones gaining awards for best academic progression in their year group as well as letters of commendation for excelling in their attitude and self-motivation in English. My GCSE students have all achieved their desired grade, progressing on to studying for A Levels and University. I am determined to inspire this level of motivation and continuous improvement in my all of my new tutees.

In addition to this, I have been employed by two local secondary schools to coach home-schooled students through their GCSE examinations, as well as providing after-school support for those who struggle to keep up in class.
I have also volunteered as a teaching assistant for a local school, teaching focus groups that need extra attention in literacy and reading, as well as designing interactive learning activities for the students.

I am experienced in teaching Key Stage 3 and 4 as a home tutor and found that working alongside school institutions, has equipped me with the needed skills and in-depth understanding of the new National Curriculum required to be a successful teacher.

Tutoring Approach

Patience and perseverance when faced with a lack of enthusiasm and willingness to learn, is a natural quality of mine. My lessons are geared towards them achieving personal 'bests' and building confidence in their own abilities. I believe in giving strong praise and commendation for hard work and have found that a combination of this, along with reviewing personal goals and targets that we set at the start of each week, produces positive effects.
