I am currently a third year student studying a Bachelors of Science at Kingston university, covering modules such as Forensic biology and Analytical and experimental chemistry. I have A levels in Biology, Geography and English literature all grades A*-C and all GCSE's A*-C. I am also proficient in maths and chemistry through use of these in my studies. I have availability either in person or online weekdays/evenings and weekends and I hold a valid enhanced DBS certificate. I am also due to commence my PGCE training in September 2024 at Sutton SCITT, gaining Qualified teacher Status (QTS) to teach secondary sciences, and specialising in biology for 16-18 year olds. I would be able to start tutoring from April 2024.
Over the last 2 years, I have worked as an Activity leader in several summer camp and Easter camp activities, leading groups of 20+ children in STEM based activities. I have worked sporadically as a nanny for the last 2 years, working with children between the ages of 4-8 assisting with homework as well as household duties. I have also worked part time at a primary school as a teaching assistant, gaining further experience in a classroom environment and getting to know the expectations and syllabus of the school curriculum. I also assisted with 1-1 sessions, aiding with SEN work and general learning such as reading and phonics. I also have experience working 1-1 in secondary classrooms, and as a mentor for students aged 12-15. During my interview process for my PGCE I also took a year 9 class for part of their biology lesson.
My teaching approach varies depending on the age and academic achievement of students individually, for primary years students it is important to solidify the foundations of reading/writing and numeracy through active learning such as games and visual demonstrations. For secondary students, application of knowledge into real life scenarios and finding a way to resonate their learning personally is helpful to ensure new information is remembered, this can then be practiced through past paper exams and verbal debates around a topic. For A level students, further reading around the subject is important to achieve higher grades, proving thorough knowledge of not only the syllabus but of the topic as a whole can help to achieve this. In my approach, I can recommend websites, books, and games to be used outside of sessions to further their learning, and can provide relevant further learning from myself and my own studies at University.
