Hi there!
My name is Jess!
I am currently pursuing doctoral study in English Literature, and prior to that, I studied English at the University of Edinburgh, where I achieved a 2:1 at undergrad and a Distinction for my Masters.
During my time as a tutor, I have taught a broad range of individuals, each with a unique set of skills and needs, and as such, I ensure to tailor lessons accordingly. We will set targets so that you can better conceptualise what you need to do in order to improve, and if you are a parent, rest assured that I will give regular updates on your child's progress.
I'm a passionate and understanding English tutor, with over five years of experience, helping students of all ages and abilities reach their potential, including children with special educational needs (autism, ADHD, developmental delays, behavioural issues, etc.).
I am always so proud of my students and the progress they make—many of my GCSE and A-level students see their grades improve by at least one grade boundary or more, and as a result of tutoring, my younger pupils have successfully gained entry into schools in the prestigious Hertfordshire Consortium, as well as fantastic private schools.
I completely understand that studying English is a real challenge for some - potentially even quite boring! However, feeling put off by a subject that we find difficult is natural, and I wholeheartedly believe that it is my job to help students gain an appreciation of the subject so that they can understand why we study English Literature—perhaps even having some fun along the way!
In our first lesson, we will have a chat about which areas you feel need improvement, and we can get started on some easier tasks to ease in. If you have anything in particular you definitely want to focus on (homework, coursework, etc.), please feel free to bring it to the session. We will also set some targets, which we will adjust over time as necessary—this is so you can conceptualise what you need to do, and hopefully feel really good when you do reach your goals!
Subsequent lessons will revolve around finding strategies to hit those targets, and I also believe in the importance of mock exams, so that by the time the real thing comes along, you'll be an expert!
For those at the university level, we will spend time revising essays and looking at how we construct effective pieces of academic writing. I want you to always be confident that you’re handing in your very best work, and we will look at new theoretical ideas/referencing as appropriate.
