Joey

My name is Joey and I am a Masters graduate of Law where I received first-class honours (distinction) and ranked third in my cohort (alongside working full-time). I am currently studying the Legal Practice Course part-time which is fully funded by a Law Society scholarship. I have spent the past year or so working in criminal defence as a paralegal, specialising in Crown Court matters. Following the LPC, I hope to qualify as a criminal solicitor (and become a solicitor-advocate) or pursue a career at the bar in Canada. I absolutely love my subject and, academically, I enjoyed first class marks in Contract Law, EU Law, Public Law, Criminal Law and Equity and Trusts. I also have an undergraduate degree in Philosophy which was wonderful preparation for my legal career.

I am originally from just outside the Lake District and have a small obsession with languages. I have studied Russian, German, French and Italian but, alas, I cannot profess to have much proficiency in them (aside from German)!

Tutoring Experience

I started tutoring Law and English as a foreign language mid-2018 and have since taught numerous students a variety of legal topics; from substantive content through to essay and career assistance.

I also have a great deal of tutoring experience from my role as a senior resident at university (which I had done for two years). This has involved one-to-one meetings with students and discussing everything from complex concepts to essay assistance. I also have some experience teaching younger students (11-16), particularly those struggling with mathematics and English.

Tutoring Approach

My current role requires a great deal of flexibility and that's exactly how I approach my tutoring. I have a great deal of empathy for those in whom it does not just 'click' as I myself was that person. Much of my interaction has been with students who have learning impairments which often requires an 'ab initio' approach, so I am more than prepared to teach from the ground up and employ the patience necessary for sound understanding. My approach can also be characterised by my interactive structure; exercises and discussion will therefore play a large part in my teaching.
