Johanna has been tutored my son for the last 18 months and I would not hesitate to recommend her. He is a strong science and maths student but has always found English a more challenging subject. Johanna has managed to address his weak points and build his confidence giving him the necessary tools to tackle the syllabus and exams. She is kind and gentle and skilfully encouraged independent learning and thought. He went in to his exams a totally different student. He has even chosen an A level that involves critical analysis and essay writing which he would never have previously considered. I couldn't be more pleased with his transformation.From Russ
I can’t recommend Johanna highly enough. Not only is she highly professional and well organised, she's also a warm and personable tutor. Johanna's verve for the subject matter comes through in her teaching which is always executed in a thoughtful and engaging manner. She quickly ascertained the weaker areas of my son’s knowledge and began to work on developing them immediately. Johanna has provided A Level English Language tutoring support to our daughter. She stepped in to help and has been excellent. She not only has helped our daughter with her lessons, learning and comprehension but also been great to deal with. She is very reliable and punctual and she has really helped us all out. In addition she took the time to understand where our daughter was at and what she needed specifically in regards to her examination board and curriculum. We couldn’t have asked for a better tutor for our daughter than Johanna!We decided to find a tutor for her only three months or so prior to the GCSE exams - her mocks had not gone well and her confidence in her ability was at rock bottom.
In this short space of time Johanna transformed her confidence and gave her a love of literature that will last a lifetime.
They clicked very quickly and our daughter always felt supported and comfortable. She transformed from a person with no belief in her ability to truly believing that not only could she do her exams, she could actually get good grades.
We don’t have results yet but she is hopeful that she achieved marks around four grades higher than her mocks for both Language and Literature.
We could not have asked for more from a tutor - the change in our daughter’s confidence spilled over into her other subjects too, and it was the best decision we made.

Johanna is a wonderful teacher. She has unbelievable knowledge of English and the way she explains the material is so engaging and interesting. She is also very patient - if you don’t understand something, she will try to explain again and in so many different ways. She understood I needed a lot of help ( English isn’t my mother tongue ) so she was very patient with me.
Johanna has incredible teaching skills. Our lessons were also fun, because she is a super friendly person, also very kind and polite. I’m so grateful I have found Johanna. I enjoyed every minute of our lectures and have learnt so much from her. She is truly an English “guru” and her Academic skills are the highest you can ask for.
I couldn’t have found a better tutor! I will definitely reach out to Johanna again when I’m ready to sit IESTL Academic level exam she was preparing me for.

Johanna is a brilliant tutor. She helped my daughter improve her writing and understanding of the English Language and English Literature GCSEs exams requirements a great deal, as well as changed her attitude towards reading and developed her love of poetry (an amazing bonus!). Over the last couple of years the school has changed English teachers several times which left my daughter with somewhat patchy understanding of what she is going to face at the GCSEs. We had lessons from December to May, and Johanna's structured, enthusiastic and patient approach to teaching really helped put my daughter at ease in the face of exams, and she ended up with 8 and 9 for her English GCSEs. Johanna is supportive and friendly, with extensive knowledge in the subject area; sessions are always productive and engaging - no time is wasted! She is able to point out areas for improvement without judgement and has many helpful resources to boost your grade. Her marking of essays is firm but fair, which makes it all the more meaningful when you do well. Johanna provided on-line tutoring for A level English Lit/Lang and accommodated a tight schedule of sessions including at weekends. Her teaching style was very warm and efficient as she was able to cover a lot of topics quickly and in great depth. I wrote to your daughter at length about this issue this week; as I only had her email address and number (as it was with her that I was communicating on First Tutors) I could not contact you directly, and I am sorry if she did not pass on my message. As I told your daughter, I have given this issue considerable thought; of course it is always my aim to continue tuition with students until a mutually agreed-upon time. However, I have no experience of working in the field of special educational needs. Had I been aware of this requirement prior to ‘accepting’ this particular request on First Tutors, I would not have agreed to tutor your son. Tutors have a responsibility towards their students and parents to be honest about what they are qualified to teach. I think my information on First Tutors concerning my tutoring experience is clear and accurate. I do not believe that I could assist your son sufficiently, in this pressurised and crucial GCSE year, with his particular set of needs and difficulties. It is the responsibility of the person looking for tuition to make all the relevant information available to potential tutors. The matter of special educational needs – a matter of which, in this case, I was only made aware in the actual lesson – is a highly relevant fact. I am sorry that you/your daughter did not choose to make this information available earlier. I consulted First Tutors in this matter and they advised on the course I have taken; they told me they will advise you to find a tutor through their service who is suitably experienced in special educational needs and, due to the unusual circumstances, at no further cost to yourself. I wish you the best with finding a suitable tutor. Of course I wish your son the very best with his studies and everything else.

I believe the most effective teachers have deep knowledge of the subjects they teach and in that respect Johanna is no exception. This is the feedback I have gathered from our senior students. Johanna has introduced new teaching methods which has had a great impact on our students’ progress and I appreciate her abilities to make efficient use of lesson time. Miss Franklin supported me with both my English Language & Literature GCSEs as I had lost confidence with these subjects and my grades had fallen from an B to a C. With Miss Franklin's guidance, I managed to achieve an A and an A* in these subjects. For example Miss Franklin showed me how to lift quotes from a text and integrate these into my essays (which was my main struggle at the time) giving me back my confidence in this subject. I further contacted Miss Franklin for her help with my A2 English Literature. I found this help invaluable as we were able to discuss the texts from a different angle than that used in class, providing many different interpretations which came in incredibly useful in my end of year exam. Miss Franklin shared her passion and enthusiasm for literature which made tackling difficult texts such as Shakespeare and Paradise Lost far less daunting.
I am now going on to study English Literature at university, which might not have happened without her support and guidance - I would not hesitate to recommend her as a tutor as I found her both approachable and inspiring.
