John is a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford, where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics. At his college, he earned the N.T. Huxley Scholarship in 2017 and previously won the G.D.H Cole prize for essays in Politics and Economics. Before this he went to King's College School, Wimbledon, where he completed the IB with a perfect score of 45, which is achieved by only a few hundred world-wide (taking English, Chemistry and Maths at higher, and German, History and Philosophy at Standard level). John currently studies philosophy, among other things, on a scholarship from Balliol College to the Maximilianeum Stiftung in Munich.
I have several years tutoring experience and have worked with students with both a great range of ability, and substantially different goals. For the most part I have coached students studying for entrance exams and aptitude tests for school or university (for which I have a 100 per cent success rate), and with students aiming to achieve top grades in GCSE or A Level exams. The oldest students I have worked with have been first-year undergraduates, the youngest primary school children -- to whom I taught English as a foreign language as part of an outreach program at King's College for several terms. I find tutoring to be immensely enjoyable, and get a great deal myself out of working with my students.
One merit of one-to-one tuition is that learning can be guided by a student's own sense of the areas they struggle with and problems they have encountered and wish to master. It is very useful, I believe to work with some sense of an overall goal in mind, whether or not this is an exam. Above all, I'm aim as far as possible to suit the style of lessons to the individual student's sense of what best helps them.
