John

Private Maths Tutor in York

I am a fully qualified maths teacher with many years experience of teaching mathematics. I am friendly and relaxed and have an excellent subject knowledge.
I am recently retired from mainstream teaching and am currently a manager in a bookshop which raises funds for Amnesty International.
25% of my quoted maths tuition fees are donated to Amnesty International through Gift Aid
I have a passion for books and a very keen interest in cinema and cookery.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 25 years experience as a maths teacher and Head of Department in 2 non-selective secondary schools in North London, with a very successful record of teaching GCSE and AS / A level (Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics) and University Entrance.

Tutoring Approach

I am friendly and extremely patient, with high expectations, and my excellent subject knowledge, considerable experience and passion for the subject enables me to help students develop confidence in their ability to see their own way through the problem solving process
I understand that each student has their own approach to learning, therefore every pupil needs an individual approach
I am as happy working with students who are struggling anxiously with their modules as with extremely confident students who wish to extend their abilities.
Students and tutees have said that they enjoy as well as make progress through my teaching. I appreciate that this is a subject which can cause anxiety but know how to help students move their abilities forward through increased confidence.
My first session is of 1 hour is given free of charge and I would aim during this lesson to talk through the needs and aspirations of the tutee (as well as doing some maths!).. Further lessons can be of one hour upwards and are charged pro-rata.
