Known as John, I am a retired secondary teacher with over 40 years experience of teaching Maths, ICT and Computing. My degree was in Computational & Statistical Science (which was mainly Maths) and I have a post-grad Diploma in Computer Science along with a PGCE. While teaching, I was part of two writing groups that produced upwards of a dozen books providing materials for innovative ways of teaching Maths.
I have taught a mixture of Maths and Computing/ICT throughout my career to students of a wide range of abilities and across the secondary age range. In Maths, I have taught from Year 7 to A Level Further Maths and ICT/Computing at all levels up to A Level. I tutored students on occasions throughout my teaching career, both paid and unpaid for friends and family, and have now been tutoring through First Tutors since 2012
It is important to understand students reasons for undertaking private tuition and vary the approach accordingly. Those who are supplementing their school tuition often need diagnosis of their specific difficulties or may need their confidence building. Those plugging a gap in their learning will need a different approach. I have always tried to find innovative and effective ways of putting across concepts or improving skills, that interest and engage students. I have been successfully tutoring via Zoom and Facetime for a dozen years.
