I completed my integrated master's degree at University of Liverpool, during which I received two awards for achievement in examinations. I went on to study Law and the Legal Practice Course at BPP University, where I again received an award for outstanding achievement. I was a qualified solicitor before COVID and therefore have experience with professional standards as well as client-care.
I decided during lockdown to return to my original interest: mathematics, and obtained my PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status from Edge Hill University.
I've always enjoyed studying mathematics as well as explaining it to others. Even when at school myself, I would help my younger brother with his maths homework. The first student I ever tutored was predicted an E in GCSE Maths; he felt like his maths teacher had given up on him because he just 'didn't get it'. In truth, he simply lacked confidence and had not felt comfortable asking his teacher for help when he was stuck. He achieved a B in his exams. Since then, my approach has always been to build confidence and above all else, ensure that the student knows it's ok to make mistakes, to ask questions or to need something explained more than once.
I began tutoring whilst studying mathematics at university and continued until the first lockdown in 2020. I completed my teacher training at Edge Hill University in 2022, however realised that I prefer tutoring one-on-one or in small groups compared to teaching full classes as I like to tailor my explanations to the needs of individual students.
I am happy to progress through workbooks, practice papers, or give standalone lessons on topics that need extra practice. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach so it depends on what would benefit the student most. I prefer letting students attempt problems themselves rather than simply lecturing (I have ADHD myself so I know how ineffective that can be), however it is always ok to ask for help or more guidance. I never want a student to feel 'on the spot' as my aim is to build confidence.
