Online English Lessons

I am secondary school English teacher with 10 years’ teaching experience. The school where I taught since 2015 - itself rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted - rated me as an “Outstanding” classroom teacher in formal lesson observations. My students have a record of excellent exam results and academic progress.

In 2015, my class achieved the best GCSE results the school had ever had. In 2018, every student in my GCSE class achieved their target grade or higher. 80% achieved above their target grade.

The parent of two tutees I have privately tutored since 2017 said:

“Kate tutored my daughter for over two years to provide her with support on her GCSE journey. Kate was an outstanding tutor with a detailed and intimate knowledge of the curriculum for English Language and English Literature. She was able to provide her invaluable experience of having taught in a state school setting to all abilities and this was crucial in supporting our daughter.

My daughter was in the bottom 10% nationally in terms of her KS2 results and her target was a Grade 2. As a consequence of Kate’s tailored and bespoke input she achieved a Grade 6 in both English Language and English Literature (only being 4 marks away from a Grade 7 in English Literature).
Kate also tutored my elder daughter on an ad-hoc basis, tailoring her sessions appropriately and she achieved a Grade 9 in both English Language and Literature. I have no hesitation in recommending Kate for tutoring of any student regardless of ability at both GCSE and A-level. Kate’s experience of teaching on the front-line to all abilities, her depth of experience in marking exams, her outstanding knowledge of all the curriculum and her calm and unassuming nature make her a first-class tutor.”

My hobbies are singing, debating, drama, public speaking and writing.

Tutoring Experience

Ten years’ experience of teaching English Language and Literature, including at Key Stage Three, GCSE and A-Level. I am a subject specialist in English with experience teaching debating to students aged 11-18, and communication skills and emotional intelligence to A-Level students. Key strengths: assessing students' needs and finding creative solutions to engage even the most reluctant learners; creating tailored schemes of learning to maximise student progress and engagement; using research-based pedagogies to support learners to make outstanding progress and build confidence; creating curricula for English Language and English Literature at Key Stage Three, GCSE and A-Level; creating and marking exams in the style of the AQA exam board at Key Stage Three, GCSE and A-Level.

As the deputy head in the English Department, I was a curriculum leader for Years 7, 8 and 9. With the Head of English, I planned our curriculum, chose appropriate texts and created schemes of work for KS3, GCSE and A-level.

Tutoring Approach

Building collaborative relationships with students and parents is the most enjoyable part of teaching for me. I like to learn about the interests and needs of students, so that I can create engaging, challenging and enjoyable lessons. The Head of English where I taught said of me: “She is an extremely creative teacher. She collects weird and wonderful props to use in the classroom to make her lessons active and engaging.”

The way I teach is underpinned by scientific research in psychology, cognitive science and neuroscience. As Deputy Head of the English department at my school, I led initiatives to implement these methods in our department, and then across the whole school.

I trained students and staff at my school to use NVC to develop emotional intelligence, wellbeing and to resolve conflicts. I also taught parliamentary debating to students aged 11-18 and helped to run the school debate club. Learning how to to debate and NVC helps students to articulate themselves clearly and confidently, and can compliment their studies of English.
