Hello, my name is Katherine. I have worked with young people for a number of years both tutoring and as an Education Worker. I am passionate about supporting young people to feel confident and empowered in their capabilities and to enjoy learning!
As well as supporting the development of academic ability, I am motivated to improve the overall learning experience and confidence of learners. Learning should be accessible to everyone and I strive to create fun and positive learning environments that suit the needs of those I work with.
In terms of my own academic experience, I have a degree in History (2:1) from the University of a Birmingham and have been working in education and outreach for the last seven years. I currently work in outreach within the conservation sector, where I link much of my work to the curriculum in Wales to inspire young people to connect with the natural world. I am planning on undertaking my PGCE in 2025 to become a qualified Primary Teacher.
In terms of my specific tutoring experience, I have supported primary aged learners with their maths and literacy skills, GCSE Maths and English learners and A level English Literature students.
I also have nine years experience of supporting primary and secondary learners as an Education and Outreach worker in various educational settings. This has included providing academic support to primary learners, secondary learners and students with diagnosed/undiagnosed special educational needs.
I have also provided extensive support to learners in Y11 - 13 with applications for jobs, apprenticeships and university and supporting them with developing skills for the workplace.
When working with learners, I aim to develop confidence and subject understanding whilst delivering an enjoyable learning experience.
A main priority for me to to develop a genuine, positive working relationship with learners and to ensure they are comfortable and feel happy in our sessions. To do this, I tailor my approach to every student and will take into consideration learning needs, experiences, interests and attitudes to learning to help plan engaging and enjoyable sessions that are relevant and accessible.
To develop the confidence of learners, I actively encourage risk taking, asking questions (especially when they don't feel they know!) and when appropriate, for learners to take a lead over their own learning to encourage accountability and independence. I have access to online resources and can plan bespoke resources and projects based on subjects identified by learners that develop various skillsets.
