If you have recently finished your year 11 exams and are planning to take A level Mathematics in year 12, I can help you to gain a head start to your A level studies. Students often underestimate the jump from GCSE to A level Maths, not only in the depth of understanding, but the speed at which they will need to be able to apply their GCSE knowledge. I can help you to improve your understanding of the GCSE topics, which are integral to your understanding of A level Mathematics and also provide an introduction as to how these are now being examined.

Likewise, if you have recently completed your year 12 exams, I can provide you with an introduction to the A level course and work through recent examination questions, to supplement those in the textbooks, which do not always reflect the change in the type of questions which the exam boards are setting. To help you prepare for your public exams, I will prepare predicted papers based on the the most recent questions which each board has been setting.

I retired from teaching maths at an outer London Grammar School at the end of 2019 but returned to teaching part-time during the pandemic on a supply basis. Over the course of my teaching career, I have realised that students often do not share my enthusiasm for or interest in Mathematics and it is often their most challenging and least favourite subject. As a result, I have adopted a variety of different strategies, teaching styles and resources to engage all of my students’ interest, regardless of ability and so ensure that each student can attain their true potential.

To ensure that each student benefits fully from each tutorial, I ask them to let me know beforehand, which aspects of mathematics they need help with, so that I can plan and prepare resources in advance. If the student wishes, for a small additionaI fee, I will also set homework, which I will mark and then go through with them in a subsequent session. I also aim to improve their confidence by working on exam techniques and how to structure solutions to questions.

Tutoring Experience

I taught Mathematics in Grammar Schools for over 18 years and have extensive experience of teaching GCSE Mathematics to students of varying abilities and all aspects of A level Maths as well as the IB, and was responsible for KS5 maths at one school. I also have 5 children, all of whom I tutored to pass the 11+, as well as helping them with their GCSEs and A-levels, not just Mathematics but several other subjects. I have recently returned to teaching

Tutoring Approach

My experience of both teaching in a school and tutoring students from several different schools and parts of the country, have made me aware of how challenging the pandemic has been for them. There is also a big discrepancy between schools as to how much online teaching and support each student has received. To ensure that each student benefits fully from each tutorial, I ask them to let me know beforehand, which aspects of mathematics they need help with, so that I can plan and prepare resources in advance. If the student wishes, I will also set homework, which I will mark and then go through with them in a subsequent session. For my online tutorials, I use an interactive whiteboard, which we can both see and write on and I can also share powerpoints and other resources with my student. I also aim to improve a student's confidence by working on exam techniques and how to structure solutions to questions. I am happy to give intensive revision tutoring during the school holidays in preparation for 11+, entrance exams GCSEs and A levels and for the student to contact me on an ad hoc basis for help with homework. I have delivered over 4000 on line tutorial since 2019 with another tutoring company.
The fees given are for lessons in my home.
