My name is Katie and I am highly experienced teacher of English. I have been teaching for 18 years and still feel privileged help students to progress in my subject, no matter their starting point.
I have worked in secondary schools across London, Essex, & Kent as teacher, Head of English, and Senior Leader/ Lead Practitioner. A key and enjoyable aspect of my role is developing trainee and newly qualified teachers across all subjects, particularly within my own specialism of English. I deliver training to teachers both within my own school setting and across academy trust(s).
In addition to my extensive teaching experience, I also work as a GCSE examiner (and have examined both the English Language and Literature papers). This affords me an intricate understanding of the GCSE specifications, and knowing exactly what the examiners are looking for.
My passion in my work is in equipping young people with the skills and confidence to succeed and I really enjoy the opportunity that 1:1 and small group sessions provide for this to take place.
Based upon my extensive experience, I specialise in tutoring students studying for the English GCSE & iGCSE courses, but am open to working with students at all levels of secondary English, including A Level/IB, both of which I have experience of teaching. I will only take on work if I feel I am expert in the courses being delivered and able to support your child to attain above expectation.
I have an excellent track record of results (as both class teacher and private tutor) and pride myself on being able to successfully adapt my teaching to suit my learners' needs. I have successfully tutored a range of students, including those with specific SEND needs, those with gaps in their learning due to time away from school, and those with an ambition to secure top grades in order to secure their place on their chosen FE course(s) with grade 7 to 9 masterclasses. The joy for me is in tailoring an approach that works for the individual and creating the ideal climate for learning, whatever that looks like.
My approach to tutoring is to personalise every session to the learner. No two sessions will be the same because no two students are the same.
The greatest barrier to success in my experience is confidence (or lack thereof).
I have a knack for building strong rapport in an incredibly short space of time, and aim to deliver a careful balance of realistic goals and very high expectations.
With my extensive experience, I am able to outline the requirements of the GCSE course in a way that is simple yet rigorous, ensuring that those I work with are motivated and challenged to achieve their best.
English is a seemingly complex subject, and I personally love the world of possibility created by it. But for those with a more logical mind, there are actually very simple criteria which examiners look for when reviewing a student's work. Once students are equipped with a sound understanding of these expectations, it is actually fairly easy for them to apply these and succeed.
My fees are as follows:
£50 per hour for in-person tuition at your home
£45 per hour for in-person tuition at my home
£40 per hour for virtual/ online tuition
I look forward to hearing from you.
Katie
