Hi there, I'm Laurie! I am an EXPERIENCED GCSE and A level Biology and Chemistry tutor, and here are my testimonials:
Zac said this - 'Since tuition with Laurie in Biology I have become more confident in my abilities. I have just completed my December mocks and got above my expected target by an entire grade boundary, getting a grade 7 instead of a 6. He assisted me in creation of revision resources, guiding me how to study and securing everything he's taught me. He's taught me more than my actual Biology teacher!'
Waleed, who went up 2 grades in 2 months in both Biology and Chemistry said this - 'Thank you so much for these 2 months. I really appreciate what you have done, because of you I have improved a lot in Biology and Chemistry and I cannot thank you enough.'
Mohammad went from grade 5 to grade 7 in Chemistry.
Jo, Ben's Dad said this - 'Thank you so much for all go your hard work in helping Ben prepare for his GCSEs. We were very concerned before he started lessons with you but have seen a huge shift in confidence and engagement with science.' And this - 'Thanks so much for your feedback (and excellent teaching). He’s a lot more confident in science leading into his mocks this week. I really appreciate all the help and support you’ve given Ben.' He also said this - 'Thanks for the update. Really pleased to hear Ben is making progress! He’s really happy with the lessons - you’re making a big difference to his understanding of the subjects.'
Caroline, Isabella's Mum said this - 'She came into me afterwards and said what a good teacher you were, so I knew from that she valued today. Thanks as ever Laurie'. And this - 'Izzy has come down really motivated with the lesson and subject knowledge, which she hadn’t been enjoying before these lessons. Thank you for being fab!' - Isabella went from a grade 5 in her first set of mocks to a grade 7 in her next set after our tutoring lessons.
I have over a year's experience in tutoring - this paired with very recently finishing GCSEs and A levels means I have a very strong understanding of how to best understand the content for when the exams come along. My results are shown above ^^
I have also taught basic English and Maths successfully to underprivileged children in Tanzania, and aided multiple peers in achieving the grades they desired and further at GCSE and A level.
These aren't just any old tutoring lessons, not only does each session involve enhancing the student's understanding and knowledge, but during the lesson I guide the student in making extremely valuable revision resources whilst requiring them to actively recall and understand the content, meaning after the lessons they are not left with nothing to help them progress further - they have high-quality resources which are checked weekly to ensure that whenever they turn to these resources for tests or exams, they are fully accurate and created in a way that best matches the technique requirements of the exam. My approach is to focus on building the student/s understanding of the content rather than memorising it, allowing them to apply their knowledge to a variety of different contexts and boosting their confidence, and will stay concentrated on the specification. I will do this through:
Active recall techniques, forcing the students to reinforce their understanding of the information
Application to real exam questions, allowing the students to develop both their exam confidence and technique, as well as practicing applying their knowledge to foreign contexts
Praise and recognition of the student's hard work and progress, further building their confidence
Going above and beyond just the one hour lessons to ensure the student's understanding, for example: guiding the student in making valuable revision resources that they can easily use outside the lesson, feedback after each lesson, preparation for the lessons, checking through the student's work, and more.
