I have recently graduated from the University of Bristol as a Master in Science in Mathematics with a First class honours. I developed my love for Maths in yr 10 /11 and grew to continue loving it even more throughout A-levels. This was partly because I feel like I had some magnificent teachers that clearly had a passion for the subject and made me actually enjoy each of the lessons. Now that I have gone through the whole process, I would love to help another student improve in the subject and maybe even convince them of how exciting and prominent it truly is. In my sessions I will not only look to help the student learn and understand the topic, but also support them in their overall studies with revision and organisation guidance that I and many of my other students have found extremely beneficial.
Over the last few years I have run weekly tutoring sessions for various students of mixed abilities. Focusing on building confidence and the necessary skills to maximise their grades in GCSE, IB and A-Level Mathematics. Outside of tutoring, I have worked for Inset Online, where I worked closely with trainers to build and help run clear and interactive teacher training events. This helped me understand not only how to develop a fun and engaging lesson, but also gave me an insight in to how exams are marked by the examiners.
I will work around the student. This may be simply by helping them understand certain topics that they are struggling with and giving them some good questions to practice on. Or, if they want, I can make a plan to go over certain topics each week and then track their progress by doing small tests. Personally, I believe that the best way for success in maths is by doing little and often, and by understanding that getting things wrong is part of the learning progress. Maths at GCSE and A-level is a lot of technique and the more you do it the more comfortable you can walk in the exam. The best thing to do is to be patient and not give up if you can't understand something straight away, the time spent wrapping your head around a complicated question is when you learn the most. In the lessons I hope to also show the students how the skills and techniques they are learning are applied in the real world, which will hopefully motivate the student to actually have a desire to learn instead of it just being a chore.
